What is a Democrat?

A Democrat would be first and foremost one who is a member of the Democratic Party. They would support the Democrat National Committee platform. During the Democratic National Convention 2012, the party adopted a platform that will serve as the message that they want the American people to elect them to enact. Four basic topics served as the building blocks for the platform, then adding some depth to each rounds out the platform. Below is the basic outline of what the 2012 Democratic Platform contains.

REBUILDING MIDDLE CLASS SECURITY

  • Putting Americans Back to Work
  • The Middle Class Bargain
  • Cutting Waste, Reducing the Deficit, Asking All to Pay Their Fair Share
  • Economy Built to Last

AMERICA WORKS WHEN EVERYONE PLAYS BY THE SAME RULES

  • Wall Street Reform
  • 21st Century Government: Transparent and Accountable
  • Lobbying Reform and Campaign Finance Reform

GREATER TOGETHER
  • Strengthening the American Community
  • Protecting Rights and Freedoms
  • Ensuring Safety and Quality of Life

STRONGER IN THE WORLD, SAFER AND MORE SECURE AT HOME

  • Responsibly Ending the War in Iraq
  • Disrupting, Dismantling, and Defeating Al-Qaeda
  • Responsibly Ending the War in Afghanistan
  • Preventing the Spread and Use of Nuclear Weapons
  • Countering Emerging Threats
  • Strengthening Alliances, Expanding Partnerships, and Reinvigorating International Institutions
  • Promoting Global Prosperity and Development
  • Maintaining the Strongest Military in the World
  • Advancing Universal Values
As a more general statement, Democrats believe in a more socialized form of government where resources are shared. They support a more progressive tax policy where the higher earners pay more than lower earners. In theory the taxes would be distributed to the lower wage earners. Some other topics that are generally supported by Democrats are; abortion rights for women, increased regulation of the economy, socialized medicine.
